Three ways: SNMP service (built-in, but not turned on) (MIB2 "standards-based": 1-6; DHCP, LANMAN, and something else); SMS, which can be configured to emit traps which correspond to event log (once launched--?--no longer needed); and sc.exe. Get data from MSDN, TechNet, SDKs, and Resource Kits. Is there a MIB compiler? Handy debugging thing to do with SMS: send trap on print request.
